Strategic Reading in the Content Areas -
Boosting Achievement in Grades 7-12

What may be viewed as a student's lack of knowledge or proficiency in a subject or on a test may, in fact, be the result of readability requirements that exceed the student's mastery level. This kit is designed to help content-area teachers increase student learning in their subject and reading comprehension skills simultaneously.

The 21 reading-to-learn strategies presented will engage students' interest in content, help them maintain their focus, and improve their understanding and ability to apply what they read. Also provided are 24 tips of reading specific types of contents, such as charts, primary and secondary sources, and instructions.

Research shows that time spent reading in class is critical for learning.

One of the greatest gifts teachers can give students is the ability to comprehend and apply the material they read. Strategic Reading in the Content Areas will empower students to draw upon a repertoire of skills and strategies, which will help them to succeed in the many academic and adult-world tasks that assume reading skills as a prerequisite.
