Parent Involvement Action Packets for K-12 Schools


Increasing parent involvement in school is a multifaceted process. One critical aspect is creating an environment in which parents know, like, and trust (KLT) the school, its policies and practices, and the staff. This goal is at the heart of this resource kit and a parent-friendly school.

No Child Left Behind [section (1118)] spells out requirements that districts must follow in order to build parent involvement and parent-school partnerships, including:
  • Develop a parent involvement policy with parents
  • Hold an annual meeting with parents
  • Vary time, childcare, transportation, and home visits to accommodate parents
  • Develop a school-parent agreement
  • Help parents understand state and district academic standards
  • Identify barriers to open up greater participation by parents at the school

Parent Involvement Action Packets for K-12 Schools is designed to help school teams implement strategies and events that encourage parent involvement. The resource kit contains 20 complete packets, which simplify the process of involving parents. Each packet has the following elements:
  • Event description and directions
  • Planning calendar, task list, and agenda
  • Flyers and reminders to advertise the event
  • Sign-in sheet and attendance certificate
  • Evaluation form (can be used by Title I schools to comply with giving parents a voice in events)
  • Data collection sheet
